I am new to Linux, but will try to answer your questions.  I use the 
login screen provided by the default Ubuntu install.  I don't know if 
Ubuntu is using GDM at that point, but a successful login displays Gnome.

Regarding the gdmflexiserver, I don't know what parameter I should use, 
but it hung when I tried the following:

gdmflexiserver -s
