Interesting Seb !
I didn't know about this "caret" mode, however I use the F7 key ALL THE TIME, because I use it as a keyboard shortcut to control Rhythmbox's "NEXT" button.

So I guess this interferes with Evolution !

Aren't system/desktop wide shortcuts (those defined in
System->Preferences->Keyboard Shortcuts) supposed to have prority over
application specific shortcuts ??

I have now switched to Sylpheed though, so I am not too bothered if you
decided to close the bug ;-)
