More data: I have 4 machines running the very latest edgy:
firestorm: AthlonXP desktop with NVidia binary driver running compiz. 24 bit display depth
phoenix: P4 Mobile laptop with opensource ATI drivers on a radeon 7500 running metacity, 16 bit display depth
firefighter: P4 HT desktop running nvidia binary drivers (remote machine, so I don't have access to its display)
flambe: G4 (ppc) Mac Mini running opensource ATI drivers on a radeon 9200, running metacity. 24 bit display depth

On firestorm's display, only gtk apps from flambe fail, and, according to gdb, they fail with the cairo_xlib_surface_get_display() call.
On phoenix's display, only gtk apps from flambe fail, and, according to gdb, they fail with the cairo_xlib_surface_get_display() call.
On flambe's display, the only gtk apps that _work_ are the ones from localhost, all others (from firefighter, firestorm, and phoenix), fail in the cairo_xlib_surface_get_display() call.

I'm trying to find a dapper box to get more info. I wish I had another
PPC box, but I don't. Still, the evidence is pretty strong that there's
some problem.
