Why did you change this bug to say that it affects gnome-applets? As far as I can tell, it's a nautilus problem, because the DVD drive also does not appear in nautilus' places bar/menu. -- mount_applet2 does not show DVD drive when a data DVD is inserted https://launchpad.net/bugs/45620
