I forgot to mention in my last message that running "gdmflexiserver
--startnew" from the terminal also caused the screen to go blank,
dislplay the nVidia splash screen, then return to the original desktop,
where the following message was displayed in the terminal:

** (gnome-screensaver - command 6599_ WARNING ** Unknown option -
throttle

Running the following command caused the same thing to happen:

sudo gdmflexiserver --startnew

Except that the terminal also displayed repeated command prompts after
the error message (90 to be exact).
