Public bug reported:
This problem occurs in Ubuntu Dapper Drake with the following players:
VLC, Totem, Gxine and Mplayer.
The audio from a DVD or AC3 soundtrack is played through the six
speakers. The output however is not 5.1. It is stereo sound that is
spread to the 6 speakers (in VLC, Totem or Gxine) or 5.1 sound with the
center speaker playing an incorrect channel (in Mplayer, when specifying
6 channel output).
That the output is stereo in VLC, Totem and Gxine can easily be heard
because the voice plays on the rear and front speakers, while it should
only play on the center speaker. Also the surround effects are missing,
the front sound is the same as the rear.
The soundcard is a Creative Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS, connected to a 5.1
speaker setup. ALSA (v. 1.0.10rc3) is used as output system in all these
players.
(The 5.1 sound is correct in MS Windows XP and the Kororaa XGL liveCD
(ALSA v. 1.0.11rc4))
