[Bug 87930] gtk1 fonts look awful

Public bug reported:

On a fairly fresh and untweaked Feisty install the fonts in remaining
gtk1 apps look very bad (see screenshot).

I have a Dell 2407WFP monitor which reports (correctly) non-square
pixels.  That may be part of it?
