Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-volume-manager

On Feisty:

jan at dikkop:~$groups
sysadm adm dialout cdrom floppy audio dip video plugdev lpadmin scanner admin impronet
(which I get from /etc/security/group.conf and /etc/pam.d/common-auth)

Yet gnome-volume-manager, the icon in the panel ahs a red cross on it as
when you do not have permissions.

jan at dikkop:~$ls -l /dev/dsp

0 jan at dikkop:~$ls -l /dev/snd

0 jan at dikkop:~$ls -l /dev/audio

When I click to open gnome-volume-manager I get a dialog box saying: "No
volume conrtol GStreamer plugins and/or devices found."

When I run it from the command line nothing happens.

gnome-volume-control starts OK from the command line. Everything looks
OK there.

Rhythmbox plays an ogg file, volume seems to be on there, but no sound.

jan at dikkop:~$ps ax|grep esd
 1741 pts/1 S+ 0:00 grep --color esd
 6771 ? Ss 0:00 /bin/sh -c /usr/bin/esd -terminate -nobeeps -as 1 -spawnfd 25
 6772 ? S 1:37 /usr/bin/esd -terminate -nobeeps -as 1 -spawnfd 25

This sound worked perfectly on dapper and edgy:
jan at dikkop:~$lspci|grep au
