OK, I am going crazy today. Sorry for all the comments.
The bug is still open, and the dbus plugin is included in the main gaim package.
However, I cannot consistently reproduce this bug.
It seems be affected by the gnome-session, because it only happens when I choose certain sessions from the GDM login window. I will add more info next time I reboot/restart X
