sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt actually works, nothing is output.  One issue
is that GNOME doesn't seem to recognise that this volume is mounted, it
doesn't come up in Nautilus or in the "Places" list.

The relevent parts of the output of sudo blkid is:

/dev/sda1: LABEL="LIFEDRIVE" UUID="1234-5678" TYPE="vfat" 
/dev/sdb1: SEC_TYPE="msdos" LABEL="TOM-TOM" UUID="0102-0304" TYPE="vfat"
