Thanks for your bug report, more information is needed.

The printingbug info script shows:
device for DeskJet-940C: hp:/no_device_found

Are you sure your printer was powered on when running the
printingbuginfo script?

If this was not the case it is enough to power on your printer and provide the output of the following command:
$ lpstat -v

Printer settings made in gnome-cups-manager are saved in ~/.cups/lpoptions and NOT to /etc/cups/ppd/printer.ppd
Do changes in gnome-cups-manager reflect in ~/.cups/lpoptions ?

>From which application did you try to print in grayscale?
Please use the unaltered PPD again (*DefaultPrintoutMode: Normal) with Normal.Gray option set in gnome-cups-manager and try if you have the same result when printing from openoffice and gedit?
