Using a fixed pixel size would be a mistake, as on very large resolutions it would be tiny. I have no idea why this is happening but it sounds like the Xserver is not reporting the correct resolution or such. -- Unreadable Font Size for GDM Login/Password https://launchpad.net/bugs/36251
