[Bug 95865] gnome-settings-daemon thinks it's God, but doesn't do a very good job of it

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

gnome-settings-daemon seems to think it's in charge of every preference
that I'd like to set on my computer. While in theory this may be a good
thing, and I agree that if implemented properly it could be, in practice
it is not, as it gets things wrong. My main qualm at the moment is that
where XFCE (which does not have an omnipotent daemon) lets me use my
multimedia keys to control any application that supports them (with the
aid of an Xmodmap), gnome-settings-daemon seems to decide that although
the keys are recognised, it will prohibit me from using them for
anything. This appears to be a regression from Edgy.
