adding some more info.

I think the problem is related to the beryl window manager (not in
standard in ubuntu)

reverting to metacity seems to fix the problem, both from the command
line (after clean reboot and update from this morning) and from the menu
(by the way, command from the menu is as expected: gksu
/usr/sbin/gdmsetup)

Doh, I wonder where I should report this bug now. gnome ? beryl ?
