Hi Anton,

I'm copying the list, I hope that's okay.

Great.

Of course.

The situation broadly is that the Radeon cards have two drivers -- Nvidia
create their own binary (ie no source) one named "nvidia" and Xorg create a
free one called "nv". Both are available on Ubuntu/Edubuntu. The
binary-only one tends to work on more recent cards as nvidia have more
information about their own cards. However, the free nv driver is
preferable for stability, flexibility and security not to mention ideology :)

The Ubuntu Guide gives details of how to install the binary-only driver,
which may give you more success.

To be honest, I avoid the binary-only driver like the plague, but you do
need to get your computer working.

You should try installing the new edubuntu version (edgy) which was
released last week. There is a new version of Xorg so it may have support
for your card.

That would be a very good idea. They will probably be working on getting
the nv driver to work with that card and can fill you in on the situation.
They might even ask you to help a little in getting your card working.
