Update Problem Help needed

I installed the Kubuntu 7.10 Beta and last night gor the updates which were
about 350 mb. The updates installed smoothly.
This morning when I started Kubuntu I got the message that there were 48
more updates available. When I clicked the get updates notification it did
not start the update and the following message was displayed:-

                                   Datebase Locked- Adept Updater

         Another process is using the packaging system ( probably some other
Adept application or apt-get or aptitude ).
         Please close the other applications before using this one.

I do not know what pther applicaton is running and how to close it.
Please someone advise because the required updates include Firefox and
Thunderbird Mail which I desperately need.

As I am a newbie I would appreciate detailed commands for shutting down the
applications.
