Just came across the same issue myself.    Thankfully, google popped up
your thread :-)

I just thought I'd mention that it'll make your life simpler if you restore
/etc/init.d/nfs-kernel-server to it's vanilla state.  The above default
file is the only change that will matter and when you go to do an upgrade,
the init.d script will not know what to do and will stop and ask you
whether you want to overwrite your changes.  In general, debian/ubuntu
provide the default files for modification in order that you need never
modify the init scripts.
