This is not a good solution for LTSP5, which uses ldm not gdm.

For LTSP5, I think you need to get an updated version of LDM which will
support auto-login with a username/password you put in
/opt/ltsp/i386/etc/lts.conf.

Scott has that version of ldm here:

You need to set these variables in lts.conf

LDM_USERNAME
LDM_PASSWORD
