So run unsupported software for 3 months? That's kind of how it works
now. I am suggesting that maybe it doesn't need to work that way. What
about a ppa that covers users for those "final three months."

Glad to hear it. Hope that I made my conjectural theme clear

I'd be interested to know if you had any hard figures in this
direction? It would be cool to have a snapshot of the
install base in some way. Way back when, folks used to add their names
to a list at k12osn.
