Do I need LDAP or just Samba??

Jim,

You didn't mention if the Windows systems are WinXP Pro, but if they are,
you should be able to make the one server a Samba PDC and join the machines
to the PDC's domain. I use an LDAP backend but Samba will also work with
just the /etc/passwd for authentication as well. As for a text, I have The
Official Samba-3 HOWTO and Reference Guide by John H Terpstra and Jelmer R
Vernooij. It is also available online at
http://samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-HOWTO-Collection/ (see chapter 4)

Sincerely,
Dave Hopkins
