When we started working on Fan Networking we introduced a plumbing command
(fanctl) to handle the mechanics of joining all the networking pieces
together. To simplify its use we then introduced helper (fanatic) as a
configuration wizard. Over time fanatic has gained more functionality
and now there is a great deal of confusion over which interface to use
for what.
In order to simplify and streamline the most common tasks we are proposing
to shift focus of functionality over to fanatic as the primary interface
and relegate fanatic to the role of helper (it is currently only used
to display actively configured Fan Networks). As part of this work we
are also looking at the form of the existing commands and making them
more consistent in particular as we add the functionality for automatic
detection of underlay/overlay prefixes (discussed previously).
The currently proposed command line interfaces are documented at the
