Because lucid never got this fix.
Someone needs to create a debdiff for lucid, and it can be fixed as a
SRU.

Title:
libpng3 symlink points to the wrong directory
Status in “libpng” package in Ubuntu:

Status in “libpng” package in Debian:

Bug description:
Binary package hint: libpng12-0
I've just installed the drivers for my Canon Pixma MP160 printer-
scanner from the Canon website. The drivers are in .rpm format, which
I converted to .deb with Alien.
When I ran the scanner program, it failed, citing a missing library.
I fixed the problem by creating a symlink from /usr/lib/libpng.so.3 to
/usr/lib/libpng12.so.0.27.0. The program now works perfectly.
The libpng12-2 package already installs a symlink from
/usr/lib/libpng12.so.0 to /usr/lib/libpng12.so.0.27.0. It would be
good if the symlink that I created could be in that package by default
too. Then other Canon users won't have the same problem.
Unless this would create a conflict with some other program, I think
it should be implemented in Intrepid before the end of the month. I'm
pretty sure that I used these same drivers on Hardy without tweaking,
so I suppose that the symlink must have been removed from the Intrepid
version. (I haven't checked.)
