This bug is not a duplicate of #739647, It is a problem that as far as I can tell is not reported in Launchpad anywhere.
Bug #739647 is about the update manage error window which can not be resized to view all the details. This bug is about the download progress details window which _can_ be resized, but which has a a default setting that is less than optimal (ie looks silly, unprofessional, and annoying). Please see attached screen shot.
Note that the screen shot is showing the progress of the cache update,
not the program update however the same thing can happen in both
windows.

Title:
[Oneiric A2] update manager download details window too small
Status in “update-manager” package in Ubuntu:
Confirmed
Bug description:
When running updates, if you click on the details drop-down to show
files being downloaded the displayed window is much too small. Only
part of one line can be seen initially, and the main focus is not
wholly on file being downloaded at the moment. The details window can
be resized, but the initial default size looks silly since you can't
actually get any useful information until the window is made larger.
I've been "bugged" by this bug since the natty alphas.
My current test bed is virtual box, mostly running default 1024x768
resolution but the problem occurs at higher resolutions and in metal
installs.
