Title:
  dpkg 1.15.3.1ubuntu1 fails to install/upgrade

Status in “dpkg” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in “dpkg” package in Debian:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: dpkg

When I try to run an upgrade, this error occurs:

Preparing to replace dpkg 1.14.24ubuntu2 (using .../dpkg_1.15.3.1ubuntu1_i386.deb) ...
  dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/dpkg_1.15.3.1ubuntu1_i386.deb (--unpack):
subprocess pre-installation script returned error exit status 1
  Errors were encountered while processing:
   /var/cache/apt/archives/dpkg_1.15.3.1ubuntu1_i386.deb

I have tried running the upgrade from every frontend to apt that I
could think of (update-manager, synaptic, apt-get, aptitude), but the
error still occurs (with a dialogue box in the graphical frontends).

I am running Karmic right now.

Here is the output of apt-cache policy dpkg:
  dpkg:
    Installed: 1.14.24ubuntu2
    Candidate: 1.15.3.1ubuntu1
