Turns out there was some muck in the CD drive - it was passed out on to
the CD eventually, and wiping it off allowed an error-free boot, but was
not initially apparent. Thanks for your help.

Bug description:
  Message "Installer encountered an error copying files to the hard
  drive." Also says to include Partman, but the file was not in the
  directory.
