Much better results from a forum note by Morbius1

Edit /etc/samba/smb.conf and add to the [global] section the following
line:

name resolve order = bcast host lmhosts wins

Can at least Network browse myself and a Windows system.  Still working
on another Oneiric on the same network.

  Confirmed

Bug description:
  1 July updated Oneiric Ocelot network browse can detect other pc's on
  the net but "mount failed to obtain share list from server".  Cannot
  see any files on the other pc's on the net.

  Narwhal, Meerkat, Lucid, ... mount with no problem between same pc's.
  (multi booted) and share files successfully.  For that matter, Narwhal
  can see files on Oneiric and copy them O.K.
