Actually notices that "dpkg -L" would return a list different from
yours. But then looked at dpkg -l and found the package is in rc state.
It seems at some point in the past a dist-upgrade must have deinstalled
it but the file in /etc/init.d remained. Re-installed the package and
all is ok. For now closing as invalid. Hopefully I remember to check on
other upgrade tests.

** Changed in: unattended-upgrades (Ubuntu)
       Status: Incomplete => Invalid

Title:
  python: can't open file '/usr/share/unattended-upgrades/unattended-
  upgrade-shutdown': [Errno 2] No such file or directory

Status in “unattended-upgrades” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  Release: Oneiric alpha3+ (dist-upgraded 2011-08-22)
  Architecture: 64bit

  The script in /etc/init.d tries to call this path (which is not
  contained in the package but sounds like it should) and fails on start
  and stop.
