The hundredpapercuts project is for small, cosmetic and easy-to-fix
bugs. If you are seeing a blank screen with a flashing cursor with
Ubuntu 11.04 or later, this is not a small bug.

Your bug report is missing most of the information needed in order to
diagnose a boot-related issue. Please run 'apport-collect 837581' on
the affected system.

Title:
Ubuntu splash screen should be visible instead of blank screen with
  flashing cursor

Status in One Hundred Paper Cuts:
  Invalid
Status in “grub” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
After choosing to boot Ubuntu from the Grub menu (if such an option
has been enabled in the Grub configuration file), the user is
presented with a blank screen with a flashing cursor in the upper left
corner for a number of seconds before the Ubuntu splash screen
appears. I feel it would be more user friendly if the user did not
have to view this blank screen, regardless of how long it is visible.

I think this blank screen is the result of Grub being set to run on
quiet mode so whatever process it is going through is being silenced
and instead a blank screen is all that remains. I think that a good
solution would be to have the Ubuntu splash screen kick in earlier if
Grub is set to run on quiet mode.
