Seems to be broken again in 11.10.  In 11.04 screen brightness was also
too low, but it could be fixed by adding lines to /etc/rc.local or
changing lines in /etc/default/grub, but that no longer works for me.

  My Fn+F7 and Fn+F8 keys are not working. Fn+F7 must brightnessDown and
  Fn+F8 must brightnessUp my LCD. Fn+F4 must change my video out.

  I changed the file /usr/share/hotkey-setup/hp.hk to add the two
  following line :

  setkeycodes     e012    $KEY_BRIGHTNESSDOWN     # Fn-F7   Brightness down
  setkeycodes     e017    $KEY_BRIGHTNESSUP       # Fn-F8   Brightness up
  setkeycodes     e06e    $KEY_VIDEOOUT           # Fn-F4 

  It resolved my problem for brightness, but I was unable to test for
  videout (maybe it is not working, or maybe my tv doesn't accept my
  laptop video out mode). But what I am sure that the key number e06e is
  right for the key videout.
