So that's what's causing the problem. I guess we can agree that this is
not an installer bug but a hardware error. If yes, I'll convert this to
a question and request you to mark it as closed.

On the other hand, you can still check the erratic hard drive for bad
blocks using this command: sudo badblocks -n -v /dev/sdx (sda1, etc). If
it also mounts to the already installed Ubuntu, open Disk Utility and
look for the SMART status.

Bug description:
  Tried installing ubuntu 11.10 on a secondary hard drive as a dual boot
  with Vista.  Install was almost complete and at final install step a
  window came up saying the install crashed.  No more info other than
  that.
