Hmmm  ....   This seems to be the same problem I just encountered on
Precise Pangolin ....  I'll re-boot and try again.

  Happened after clicking on "Partial Upgrade" after update-manager said
  it couldn't do a full upgrade. Partial upgrade window had appeared but
  repeatedly greyed-out until eventually crashing out completely.
