[Bug 792010] Re: Software-center not documented

This bug report is about several different things.

License information: How USC presents this is described in the
specification. <https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoftwareCenter#License_label> As
described there, .deb packages currently have no standard way to provide
more detailed information (bug 435183).

Installed size: This is also defined in the specification
<https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoftwareCenter#Software_item_screen> ("Text
describing the “Total size:” of the item"). The specification would
benefit from a simple and stable test case for this. If you can find a
case where it is displaying incorrect information, please provide that
either here or in a new bug report.

Updates information: This is described in a document that is,
unfortunately, not currently linked to from anywhere.
<https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PackageMaintainednessPresentation> I plan to
update this in the main specification soon.

Screenshots: Though USC can install software that is downloaded from
Sourceforge or other Web sites, in general we want to encourage software
being installable from official channels instead. So
screenshots.ubuntu.com/screenshots.debian.net allows upload of
screenshots for recognized packages only. When the developer portal is
up and running, it will allow developers to upload screenshots for their
own software, and it will be self-documenting.

In general, USC is documented better than most other parts of Ubuntu.
That is not an excuse for any area where we unhelpfully lack
information. But I don't see that there's anything specific we could do
to fix this bug, that isn't already being tracked elsewhere.

Title:
  Software-center not documented

Status in “software-center” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: software-center

Software Center does not fill in fields from correctly built packages
and the documentation is missing or impossible to find with reasonable
  searching.

Trying to build packages that fill in information in the software
  center is difficult or impossible.

When writing small utlity programs for Ubuntu 11.04 one want to have
all fields filled in the software center. These include:

  Installed-size, as defined here,
  http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-controlfields.html#s-f-Installed-Size
If this is in the control file, it is ignored by software center.

License: unable to find how to fill this in correctly.

Updates: unable to find out how to fill this in correctly.

Screenshot: it is not open to have a site like:
  http://screenshots.debian.net/
When trying to add a screenshot, only screenshots for official packages can be added. If you are distributing your software utility from your own website or from sourceforge, then you apparently cannot have a screenshot. Why can it not be in the package, or where is the documentation that says that it can?

Perhaps I can answer these questions by studying the source for
software-center, but I shouldn't have to do that.

  Thank,
  WindyWeather
