I started apport as Brian suggested, and used apt-get to reinstall the
package. However it went perfectly smoothly this time; no errors or
segfaults. So let's just put this down to chance ;)

  Running 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure mysql-server-5.1' after the
  installation did work fine, and all seems to be working now.
