I can confirm the bug and the workaround:
I'm on 10.10 and I used usb-creator-gtk to create an image of Linux Mint 10 (also based on 10.10). I got the same error.
Then I replaced the 'syslinux/vesamenu.c32' file on the stick with the one found in /usr/lib/syslinux/vesamenu.c32 and it worked.
