Title:
[Lucid] ubiquity crashed with , E in update() when I clicked on
  "update this installer"

Status in “ubiquity” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: ubiquity

  RELEASE: Lucid Lynx development version
  CD/DVD VARIANT: all desktop images
  ISO BUILD: 2010-03-06
  SYMPTOMS:
Preparing to install using the live environment desktop launcher. When Ubiquity starts, the first page is Welcome. If I click on "update this installer" without an internet connection, ubiquity errors with this report. Further, the installer is now showing "Checking for installer updates" , frozen at 60% on the progress indicator, file 62 of 100. There is no way to continue this update, even after creating the internet connection.

The only way to close the updater now is right-click on the bottom panel, "Checking for installer...." , left-click close.

I would have expected to at least get an error message that there is no network connection instead of an apport report. There should be a check built in to throw an error screen up that there is no connection before the installer even attempts to get any updates.

The only way I found how to close the indicator is experience. The
new user would have been completely lost and be forced to restart the
machine with a hard power off.

  STEPS TO PRODUCE:
      1. From the desktop cd menu, select "Try without installing".
      2. After the desktop appears (about 15 minutes on my 1.5GHz, 1GB ram system), click the icon to install.
      3. Make sure there is no internet connection. I use static IP' s only, and forgot to set it up.
      4. Read the 'Welcome' screen, and click on "update this installer" in the last sentence.
      5. Observe the installer checking for updates.
      6. It will give an apport error and freeze the indicator.
