Bart, you have different hardware so it's unlikely that you had the same
bug.
For everyone else, support for Gutsy ended some time ago. If this is
still occurring on Ubuntu 11.04 "Natty Narwhal" please open a new bug.

Title:
Gnome startup doesn't go through correctly on Gutsy
Status in “casper” package in Ubuntu:
Invalid
Bug description:
When trying out the latest Gutsy Tribe 5, I wasn't able to complete Gutsy startup.
A checkered screen with an X would show up, then the screen would turn "brownish-pink" as normal before the desktop background is loaded.
After this, the screen shortly turned black for a while while the mouse cursor would still be displayed.
Then the screen would turn fully black and turn checkered again and go through the full cycle again.
Sometimes it gets to the point where it shows a background or the top and bottom bars as grey, but it does not complete the system startup.
If I try to open a console by pressing CTRL-ALT-F1, the screen gets distorted on the top half but the rest of the screen stays the same.
This renders the console unusable to find out more information.
My system:
I use a Acer Aspire laptop, either a 5050 or 5051 (the lshw and one of the stickers on the laptop says 5050, but another says 5051AWXMi).
The graphics card in it is a ATI Radeon XPress 1100.
Greetings,
Niek Bergman.
