  update manager will not run update

Status in “dpkg” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  I get the following error trying to run update manager E:Encountered a
  section with no Package: header, E:Problem with MergeList
  /var/lib/dpkg/status, E:The package lists or status file could not be
  parsed or opened.'  .. How do I correct this,  I have tried to us get-
  app and synaptic but get the same errors.
