This means nmbd is failing to start.

Can you try

sudo start nmbd

and provide the output? Also the output of

sudo grep nmbd /var/log/syslog

Would be helpful. And finally, if you can include
/var/log/samba/nmbd.log , we can take a look at it to see why nmbd is
failing to start.
