Hi Steve,
The problem was repeatable - couldn't update for a few days;
What I did: (not a claimed valid workaround) killed the process,
rebooted several times,
ran apt-get update /upgrade yesterday.
Text-box dialogs came up, with same results, so I killed the process.
then today Update Manager didn't complain ... ?!
Debconf results:

Will be back on-line after Scout camp this weekend. For those of you
who also run these things, you know what that means.
Cheers, and thanks for dealing with this.

Title:
package libpam-runtime 1.1.2-2ubuntu8.2 failed to install/upgrade:
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit
status 1
Status in “pam” package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
Dialog complains that no pam modules have been selected; but when each
offered choice (unix, gnome keyring, consolekit) is selected, and
Forward clicked, the same dialog appears repeatedly ... endless loop.
Due to PAM involvement and my ignorant-knee-jerk-over-reacting-
paranoia, the 'security vulnerability' is checked; please uncheck when
appropriate.
Stock 11.04 install, performing daily update check, expected lib-pam
to update cleanly; endless loop of 'No PAM modules have been selected
even when each was selected.
