Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: grub2

Please don't bail if / is not a mounted hard drive. Just ignore the
failure.

(I'm running a diskless Ubuntu install. Upgrading

Setting up linux-image-2.6.32-31-generic (2.6.32-31.61) ...
Running depmod.
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-31-generic
Running postinst hook script /usr/sbin/update-grub.
/usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?).

Perhaps the postinst hook script could test for this condition or simply
proceed.

Just update the initramfs and vmlinuz files - I'll copy them over to
where my tftp server keeps them.

Thanks.
