I have the same with a command line install from the Natty alternate CD.
I have to add myself to the audio group and create a minimal /etc/asound.conf as well

pcm.!default {
 type hw
 card 0
}

ctl.!default {
 type hw
 card 0
}

Title:
  alsa-lib: cannot find card '0'

Status in “consolekit” package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: alsa-utils

  alsa-utils 1.0.20-2ubuntu6 in karmic

  playing a file with mplayer get error
  alsa-lib: cannot find card '0'

  After a lot of searching the fix to play the audio is
  Add user to the audio group.

  This fix should be documented, as the error message is no help.

  Next version of alsa-utils should set this by default.

  Hope you do not mind a bug post with a solution.
