See my comments in bug # 796849  as I believe they are related.

I was using synaptic to purge an installed packagel

E: linux-headers-3.0-0: Package is in a very bad inconsistent state -
you should  reinstall it before attempting a removal.

I have attempted to remove this package and keep getting the same comment see above.
The failure is the same if I use dpkg via the terminal or thru synaptic while attempting to reinstall it.

I need a fresh approach so suggestions welcome.
Note:  is a later version soon to be available ?
Maybe another upgrade?
