Title:
mouse and keyboard unresponsive during Update Manager update of grup
etc. after using USB switch
Status in “grub2” package in Ubuntu:
New
Bug description:
Binary package hint: grub2
This is probably a hardware issue but I will report just the same.
I used the update manager to update a list of packages shortly after a
fresh install of KarmicKoala from CD. I did not look very closely at
the list and clicked "Install Updates". After this started, I used a
USB hub/monitor switch to switch my monitor, mouse, and keyboard to my
Windows 7 machine to do some work. When I switched back to Ubuntu
several minutes later the screen saver had kicked in and the mouse and
keyboard were unresponsive. I have been switching back and forth daily
since the install two days ago with no problems (the machine responds
to mouse/keyboard events after switching back, clearing the screen
saver). Hitting the power button cleared the screen saver and allowed
me to see that both the Update Manager and console were paused while
updating grub because a separate grub update window required user
interaction. Unplugging keyboard/mouse and plugging back in had no
effect (still no response). Other OS responsive though when USB
hub/switch is set to it. Hitting the power button again threw up the
power down menu and the machine shut down after 60 seconds normally,
though obviously without finishing the grub update. Machine booted
normally but with the "detected crash" notice on the upper right (and
subsequently this page). However, running Update Manager again tells
me that the system is up to date while I know that grub should have
failed, along with anything which might have come after it.
Perhaps one of the updates issued a restart to the usb drivers which
then found no external devices when I was on the other machine?
