This bug does not show too much interest.

However, even the latest grub (1.99-8ubuntu1) and with the latest
nvidia-current (275.09.07-0ubuntu1) the gfxpayload does not work.

I have to add the line
GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=1024x768
in /etc/default/grub.

Even doing this, the Plymouth does not usually show up during boot
process.

Title:
[Oneiric] gfxpayload=keep does not work on new grub2 1.99

Status in “grub2” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: grub2

The new released version of grub2_1.99 (1.99-2ubuntu1) does not work correctly.
  I have NVidia 285GTX and I use nvidia-current_270.41.06_0ubuntu1.
Installing new grub2 1.99 will make gfxplayload fail and thus Plymouth does not start.
Otherwise the boot process is successfull, though.

The previous version 1.99~rc1-13ubuntu3 works just fine.

The new grub2 packages (grub-common, grub-pc, grub-pc-bin, grub2-common) are in Launchpad (status "new"),
I installed them manually with dpkg.
