Hi Michael, thanks for your report. This issue has been reported already
and we are tracking it at bug 772549, and so I will mark this one as a
duplicate of that. Please check bug 772549 for details on the workaround
(rebooting is indeed one option ;) and to track the status of the fix.
Also, if you have any additional comments please make them there.

  USC is a gray background without icons, is unresponsive (no menus)

Status in “software-center” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Starting the Software Center through all the usual ways produces the
  same thing. The application loads with just a gray background in the
  window, and nothing else, and there are no menus in the global menu,
  and keybindings do not work. The application can be quit using the
  Close button. Closing and re-opening has the same effect.

  This is the first time it has occurred, but it occurred right after I
  experienced another bug (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
  /xserver-xorg-input-evdev/+bug/795720) which I filed here already and
  have been experiencing for the past few months intermittently.
