Hi and thanks for looking into this,
I've updated to LinuxMint 11 and my wife Ginette is still on LinuxMint
9. My computer has Gufw 11.04.2. When I say enabled or disabled the
rules are in RED when enabled and not shown when disabled. The computer
of my wife Ginette has no firewall. Both machines are AMD64.

Initially I go to places/network and see my machine and Ginette plus
windows. I click on Ginette then MyFiles and it says fail to mount. I
close the network window. I disable the firewall and again click on
places/networks, then Ginette/MyFiles and it mounts and I can access her
files. I close the network window and enable the firewall and click on
places/network then Ginette/MyFiles and I can access her files. Once I
unmount MyFiles on Ginette from my Desktop (using the GUI right click) I
have to start again by disabling the firewall.

At one time I was using firestarter and gave up on it as the article in
Linux the complete manual (with Live DVD Ubuntu 9.10) simply failed
networking. When I moved to LinuxMint 11 I re-formatted my hard drive
to get rid of old stuff including firestarter.

Yes, I'm using the GUI when I can and a terminal when I must. (I've
spoiled myself). I've never seen networking work without first mounting
the remote with the firewall disabled. I've been confused due to all
the articles, comments, solutions and variations found by Google on this
subject and I've tried a few of them. I've also used ufw from the
terminal to enter a few things, but I really do not know what ports I
should have enabled. All I want is email, http, shttp and networking.

This is what I have enabled on the firewall and attached is smb.conf.
Anything else just email and I'll be happy to get back to you. Ian.

Title:
Samba works or may not work quite random

Status in “samba” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  1) When I click on Places/Network with the firewall disabled it usually shows my other home computers and does a mount on my desktop when I click them. Once mounted I can enable the firewall and access their shared files from the mount.
  2) With all firewalls disabled I often get only the windows network icon and it's empty. It was working as per item 1 last week and all that I've done is to run the updates and updated all of a few hundred megs of stuff. I've been fiddling with this on and off for ages and think I've got it fixed only to fall down next time I use networks.

I'm running 10.4 by the way. Ian.
