Title:
Update to 8.10 - libc.so.6 error leaves system unbootable
Status in “dpkg” package in Ubuntu:
Expired
Bug description:
I updated a system from 8.04 (wtih current patches) to 8.10. During
the update process, I was greeted with dozens of dpkg errors, most of
them telling me that some package post-install script returned an
error status (a lot of core packages like xorg had similar errors).
First of these errors was indicated for libc, (but the install
continued on background, so it was too late to stop it)
The update then proceeded to a point where the progress bar was at
around 50% complete telling, that the update is finished, but some
packages did not install. After dismissing this informational message,
the updater quit, leaving me with an unusable system - gnome terminal
could not be opened for obvious reasons and trying to log in from
console gave me the an error in libc.
A similar error now appear during early boot stage altering failing
commands like mkdir, chown:
some_command: /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.8' not
found (required by /lib/libselinux.so.1)
The init hangs after "Starting kernel log daemon...."
