Title:
Update failed while installing packages (7.10 to 8.04) - System now
  hangs during booting up

Status in “dpkg” package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: update-manager

My system settings were mostly set to the default values. But I installed Xen and a corresponding self-made kernel plus I did some changes for the hwclock, but I'm not sure if those changes were for domU or dom0. I also installed the new ATI graphics driver from their website with self-compiled deb packages.
During updating I got displayed that the system is possibly in a broken state now and also "installArchives() failed". And yes, it is: It hangs up after initialising usb now. It doesn't matter which kernel I choose to boot up and recovery mode hangs, too. I append the log files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/. Unfortunately the errors during boot up were not logged. Last log entry is from more than half an hour ago, but I tried to boot just about 10 or maybe 15 minutes ago...

PS: Sorry, that my attachment is just a tar archive. I don't have the
option to compress it as gz or bz2 at the moment.
