...not to mention that our beloved, crufty old icon still prominently
features the old Ubuntu logo.  :)

We are well overdue for a new icon and many people have expressed this
recently, so I've targeted this for Oneiric in the Software Center UI
Enhancements spec:

  In user testing of Ubuntu on 2010-12-15, participants identified the
  icon as a utilities bag (calculator, calendar) or “world icon” or
  “settings”.
