Excellent!  Thank you for taking the time to make those reproduction
steps.  Much appreciated!

Can you file new reports for those 2 bugs?  The bug about the install
problem should be filed against 'ubiquity (ubuntu)', and the bug about
the problem with the modem should be filed against 'linux (ubuntu)'.

After, you can link me to the bug about the install problem.
Unfortunately I don't have much experience with those 3g modems so I
wont be of help there, but I will have a look at the other bug.

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: update-manager

  While using "Software updates" utility and trying to update Ubuntu to
  Maverick 10.10, the update procedure first warns  about "Third party
  sources disabled" and then finishes right after fetching in "Setting
  new software channels"
